Private Label Eyewear Sourcing from China 2026: The Complete OEM Process from Concept to Delivery

Private label eyewear has become one of the most commercially attractive entry points for optical retailers, online brands, and fashion labels in 2026. The combination of lower minimum order quantities from Chinese OEM factories, shorter sampling cycles, and the growing consumer preference for unique frame designs over generic wholesale product has created a structural opportunity for buyers who understand how to manage the OEM process effectively. This guide covers the complete private label eyewear sourcing process from initial concept to production delivery.

Step 1: Define Your Product Concept Before Contacting Factories

The most common and costly mistake in private label eyewear sourcing is approaching Chinese factories without a defined product brief. Factories receive hundreds of enquiries daily; buyers who cannot specify their target retail price point, preferred material category, frame shape direction, and target market demographic receive generic responses and generic pricing. A minimum viable product brief for private label eyewear sourcing should specify: material (acetate, TR90, metal, titanium, or combination), frame shape category (round, rectangular, geometric, oversized), target face width range (small 125 to 130 mm / medium 132 to 138 mm / large 140 mm+), hinge type (barrel or spring), colour direction (2 to 4 colourways), logo placement (temple, front, or both), and target FOB price range.

Step 2: New Tooling vs Existing Mold — The MOQ Decision

The most important decision in private label eyewear is whether to use existing factory tooling with logo customisation, or to commission new tooling for a proprietary shape. Logo customisation on existing molds requires MOQs of 100 to 300 pieces per style, with no tooling fee, and typically delivers samples within 3 to 4 weeks. New tooling for a custom shape requires a die fee of USD 800 to 2,500 per mold set depending on material and complexity, with MOQs of 300 to 600 pieces and 6 to 8 week sampling lead times. For brands launching their first private label collection, existing mold customisation with distinctive colourways and logo application is the lower-risk path. New tooling is justified when the proprietary shape is a core brand differentiator and the volume justifies the tooling amortisation.

Step 3: Pre-Production Quality Verification

Pre-production quality verification for private label eyewear covers four areas. Material verification: request material certificates and, for premium materials, arrange XRF testing to confirm acetate sheet source (Mazzucchelli or equivalent) or titanium alloy composition. Sample approval: evaluate fit, hinge action, nose pad comfort, and colour accuracy against reference samples before approving production. Fit testing: test samples on target face shapes — Asian fit and Western fit requirements differ significantly in bridge width, nose pad angle, and temple curvature. Finally, packaging specification: private label packaging design should be confirmed and a packaging sample approved before production begins, as packaging issues delay more first-order shipments than product quality issues.
