As global electronics manufacturing enters 2026, HDI (High Density Interconnect) PCBs have become the backbone of advanced applications in artificial intelligence hardware, automotive ADAS systems, 5G infrastructure, and wearable devices. The HDI PCB market is expected to surpass USD 18 billion by 2028, growing at a CAGR of over 9%. For procurement engineers and OEM buyers sourcing HDI PCBs from China or Asia, understanding the certification and quality evaluation framework is not optional — it is essential for mitigating risk and ensuring supply chain reliability. Three IPC standards form the core evaluation framework: IPC-2226 (HDI Design), IPC-A-600 (Bare Board Acceptability), and IPC-A-610 (Assembly Acceptability). Each addresses a different phase of the HDI PCB lifecycle. Additionally, IPC-6012 works in tandem with IPC-A-600 to specify performance requirements. SCM Group HK provides HDI PCB solutions with full traceability from design review through factory audit and final inspection.

IPC-2226: The Design Standard for HDI PCBs

IPC-2226 is the foundational design standard for HDI printed boards using microvias, fine-pitch routing, and compact multi-layer structures. It establishes the design rules for microvia diameter (typically 50–150 µm), aspect ratio, stacked and staggered via configurations, and minimum copper pour clearances. For AI accelerator boards, automotive ECUs, and 5G mmWave modules, IPC-2226 compliance is the starting point for qualification. The standard classifies HDI boards into six types (Type I through Type VI) based on microvia stack depth. Type III and above — involving stacked microvias through multiple layers — demand particularly precise laser drilling and electroplating control. When evaluating a supplier, ask for their IPC-2226 design review checklist and DFM (Design for Manufacturability) report. Any certified HDI PCB supplier should be able to demonstrate compliance at the design verification stage before production begins.

IPC-A-600 & IPC-A-610: Evaluating Bare Board and Assembly Quality

IPC-A-600 (Acceptability of Printed Boards) is the definitive illustrated inspection guide for bare HDI PCBs. It provides photographic reference for target, acceptable, and nonconforming conditions — covering copper thickness uniformity, microvia fill quality, annular ring integrity, surface finish (ENIG, HASL, OSP) adherence, and laminate defects. Class 1, 2, and 3 criteria align with consumer, industrial, and mil-aero/medical requirements respectively. Most automotive and AI hardware buyers now require Class 2 minimum, with many specifying Class 3. IPC-A-610 extends this evaluation to assembled boards — covering solder joint acceptability, component placement tolerances, and cleanliness requirements. For HDI boards with fine-pitch BGAs (0.4 mm pitch and below), IPC-A-610 Class 3 compliance is the industry benchmark. SCM Group conducts IPC-A-600 and IPC-A-610 incoming quality inspection for all HDI PCB orders before shipment.

How to Evaluate an HDI PCB Supplier's Certification Capability in 2026

When qualifying an HDI PCB supplier for 2026 production programs, go beyond the certificate list. Request cross-section analysis reports demonstrating microvia copper plating thickness (target: ≥12 µm) and barrel crack-free performance after thermal cycling. Verify that the factory's IPC-CIS (Certified IPC Specialist) personnel are current and that their AOI, X-ray, and flying probe test equipment is calibrated. For automotive projects (AEC-Q100 target components), IATF 16949 factory certification is additionally required. Lead time realism — a critical evaluation factor in 2026's tightened PCB substrate supply environment — should be confirmed against the factory's confirmed order backlog, not just quoted lead times. SCM Group provides supplier audit reports, test reports, and cross-section images as standard documentation for all HDI PCB sourcing projects.
