For international brands and independent optical retailers launching private-label or custom frame lines, understanding quality verification requirements and minimum order quantity (MOQ) structures is essential before committing to a supplier. The three leading frame materials — acetate, titanium, and TR90 thermoplastic — each carry distinct quality checkpoints, production timelines, and MOQ thresholds. Wholesale MOQs from established Chinese OEM manufacturers typically start at 300 pieces per style for stock-based production, while custom OEM acetate programs may require 500–1,000 pieces per colorway due to the manual handwork involved in cellulose acetate processing. Poorly specified quality standards are the leading cause of disputes in frame OEM programs, as issues like temple hinge alignment, nose pad asymmetry, and surface coating adhesion typically only manifest after 200–300 wear cycles — well past the payment and shipping stage. Getting quality terms right from the start protects both the brand and the buyer-supplier relationship.

Quality Checkpoints by Frame Material

For acetate frames, the critical inspection parameters include: lens aperture dimensional tolerance (±0.3 mm), hinge screw torque retention after 2,000 open/close cycles, surface gloss and color matching against an approved master sample, and front-to-temple angle symmetry (max 1° deviation). First-article samples (pre-production samples, or PPS) are mandatory before bulk production commences, typically priced at USD 80–200 per design. Always require that samples be drawn from the actual production mold and material — not handmade prototypes. Include a written sample approval report with dimensional measurements and fit model try-on confirmation in your standard order workflow to ensure the production run matches approved specifications.

Pre-Shipment Inspection Protocol

For frame OEM orders above 500 pairs, a third-party pre-shipment inspection (PSI) is strongly recommended. Standard PSI for eyewear follows AQL 2.5 for major defects and AQL 4.0 for minor defects, covering visual surface inspection, dimensional check (minimum 10 frames per style), hinge function test, and packaging verification.
