Quality eyewear frames demand rigorous material testing to ensure durability and safety. In 2026, premium frame manufacturing uses acetate, titanium, and bio-acetate materials with increasingly strict testing protocols. This guide covers essential quality verification methods for custom frame production, from material sourcing to final assembly inspection.

Material Composition & Purity Testing

Acetate frames must contain ≥85% cellulose acetate per ISO 13660. Test methods: FTIR spectroscopy confirms polymer chain composition; thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) measures degradation temperature (minimum 280°C). Titanium frames require ≥99.5% purity Ti-6Al-4V or Ti-5Al-2.5Sn alloy. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) verification is standard for all titanium components. Moisture content <1.5% for acetate stock to prevent warping during manufacturing.

Mechanical Property Standards

Acetate frames: Tensile strength 35-50 MPa, Elongation at break 8-15%, Flexural modulus 1.8-2.5 GPa. Titanium frames: Tensile strength 140-160 MPa, Yield strength 80-110 MPa. Impact resistance testing per ISO 18369-3: Drop from 1.5 meters on hard surface, frames must not crack. Hinge durability: Minimum 10,000 open-close cycles without loosening or breakage.

Surface Finish & Chemical Resistance

Surface finish requirements: Acetate Ra <1.6 micrometers for polished surfaces, no visible scratches >0.1mm. Titanium coating thickness (if PVD applied): 1-3 microns minimum. Salt-spray testing per ASTM B117: 500-hour minimum for acetate lacquer, 1000+ hours for titanium coatings. Chemical resistance: Frames must resist contact with cosmetics, sunscreen, and alcohol without discoloration or material degradation. Temperature stability: -10°C to +50°C operating range without dimensional change exceeding ±0.5mm.
